HAMPDEN – Norman H. Blanchard, 88, formerly of Winn, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at Mid Coast Senior Health Center, Brunswick, after a short hospital stay. He was born Sept. 29, 1920, in Farmington, the son of Clifford and Minnie Blanchard. He attended Farmington schools. Mr. Blanchard married Mabel M. Hagerstrom, Nov. 30, 1939, in Farmington. He worked for Forster Manufacturing for 40 years, retiring in 1985. He was a World War II veteran, serving as an advance scout with General Patten’s forces in the European Theatre and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism while under fire. He enjoyed gardening, camping, and traveling with his wife and family. In addition to being involved on the hospital board when Penobscot Valley Hospital was being established in Lincoln and later chairman of the board, he was a selectman in the town of Winn and served as town moderator for many years, became a member of the Winn school board and served as chairman of the board of SAD 30 when SAD 30 was being formed, and was a trustee for Lee Academy. He was a faithful member of St. Thomas Mission Church, Winn, where he served in many capacities, including building and grounds maintenance, as well as serving as senior warden at the church for many years. They named a room for him for all his years of service. Norman was predeceased by his brother, Bert of Caribou. Survivors include his wife, Mabel of Hampden; a sister, Beula Green and her husband, Don, of Brunswick; four daughters, Olivia B. Williamson and her husband, David, of Woolwich, Pamela B. Williamson and her husband, Terrence, of Hampden, Meridel A. Cosgrove and her husband, Richard, of West Bath and Susan E. Kimball and her husband, Walter, of West Bath; nine grandchildren, Michael Williamson of Wilton Manors, Fla., David Margas of Jamaica Plain, Mass., Jennifer Maconochie and her husband, James and their two sons, of West Roxbury, Mass., Dianne Strait and her husband, Shannon and their two sons, of Sanford, N.C., Stephan Margas of Onchiota, N.Y., Amanda Baker and her three daughters, of Cecilia, Ky., Walter Kimball Iii and his wife, Becky and their son, of West Bath, Richard Cosgrove Jr. and his wife, Nohemi and their two sons, of El Paso, Texas, and Tamara Hegele and her husband, Steve and their four children, of Heath, Ohio. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Winn, with the Rev. Carolyn Metzler officiating.
