ORLAND – Jean R. (Gray) Joy, 65, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, with her loving family by her side at a Bangor hospital. Born July 8, 1943, in Castine, she was the daughter of Lewis L. and Florence A. (Brockway) Gray. Jean graduated from Bucksport High School in 1961; she then continued her education at Long Island Hospital, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1963, that same year she married Everard “Jack” Joy. Jean was instrumental in starting the library at the Orland school. She had a great love of animals. She is survived by her children, Daniel Joy of Bucksport, Robert Joy of Orland, Audrey Joy of Orland and Jackie Low and husband, Kevin, of Bucksport; adopted son, Paul Dow of Wyoming; beloved granddaughters, Miranda Joy of Orland, Brittany and Sarah Low of Bucksport; adopted granddaughter, Jessica MacDonald of Orland; brothers, Joseph Gray of Florida and Alan Gray and wife, Sue, of Vermont; and sisters, Carolyn Gray, Mary Deans and husband, Lloyd, all of Orland. She is also survived by a special cousin, Becky Sue Bull of New Hampshire; as well as a lot of special friends, several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Everard Joy; and one brother, Leon Gray. A funeral service will be held noon Monday, Dec. 8, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Orland. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jean’s memory may be made to an animal shelter of one’s choice.
