ST. GEORGE – Raymond Edwin Buxton, chief warrant officer 2, retired, 76, passed away Dec. 7, 2008, at his home, from cardiac arrest. His loving wife, Eleanor, was by his side. Raymond was born March 3, 1932, in Pittsfield, son of Horace and Hazel (Looke) Buxton. He attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from Maine Central Institute. Raymond served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Navy, reporting for duty in March 1951. After training he spent several weeks at the Naval Station, Treasure Island, Calif., waiting for transport to his first assignment aboard the USS Cony in Korean waters. In 1953 he was assigned to the staff, Commander Destroyer Force, O.S. Atlantic Fleet aboard the USS Yosemite. From November 1956 to January 1957, Raymond attended court-reporting school in Newport, R.I. Upon completion he was assigned to the U.S. Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, R.I., until December 1960. From January 1961 to March 1963, Raymond was on the staff, U.S. Naval Forces, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In March 1963 he reported to the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station, Richmond, Va. From October 1966 to 1968, Raymond was assigned to the personnel office of the USS Wasp, CVS-18. In 1968 he was attached to the Defense Attache Office of the U.S. Embassy at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. From 1969 to his retirement in April 1971, Raymond was the personnel officer, U.S. Naval Station, Annapolis, Md. After his retirement from the Navy, Raymond attended Thomas College, Waterville, to continue his education. He was employed by Cianbro Corp., Pittsfield, and later transferred to Dragon Cement after Cianbro purchased the company. Raymond was a poet and being very romantic, enjoyed the wine and cheese picnics at Birch Point State Park with his bride. Raymond and Eleanor recently celebrated their 25th anniversary. He was an avid follower of the Boston Red Sox and an affectionado of crossword puzzles. In addition to his wife, Eleanor (Willey), Raymond is survived by two children from his previous marriage: his son, Steven Buxton and his partner, Nicole Bergerson, of Gorham; and daughter, Kathryn Ludden and her husband, David, of Pittsfield; five grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Whitten and her husband, Don, of Berwick; several nieces and nephews. At Raymond’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. His remains are to be scattered at sea. If desired, donations may be made to St. George Ambulance, P.O.
