DEDHAM – Dwight Cleveland Smith, 75, died Dec. 8, 2008, at his home, with his family by his side. He was born March 19, 1933, in Dedham, the son of Mertie and Blake Smith. Dwight was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and worked as a master burner technician for 40 years. He was known as “Spike Dite the Yodeling Cowboy” and at age 18, he sang on WLBZ Radio. He was a 34-year member of the Rising Sun Lodge No. 71, AF & AM, Orland. He enjoyed his rides over the road with his son-in-law, Lindsey. Dite was predeceased by his wife, the love of his life, Elsie (Phillips) Smith; his parents; and his brothers, Durwood and Duane Smith. Surviving are his children, Deborah Bradford and her husband, Lindsey, Dwight Smith II, Michael Smith, Robert Moore, Kathy Smith and Jane Maynard; grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Bumpy,” Brett Conners and his wife, Joanne, Autumn Graham and her husband, Andy, Erica Smith and Vincent Cogdell, Scott Bradford and his wife, Jessica, Adam Conners and Christina Bragan; great-grandchildren, Khanye, Alexis and Gwendolyn; several nieces, nephews great-nieces and great-nephews. He will be remembered by a very special friend, Wilbur Cotton. His family especially thanks New Hope Hospice for their care and support. Dite requested that services be private.
