NEWPORT – Hilda W. Hastey, 82, died Dec. 8, 2008, at a Pittsfield health care facility, after a short period of ill health. She was born March 12, 1926, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Otis and Annie (Hoffses) Alley. She was educated in Jonesport schools. She married Richard L. Hastey, Dec. 25, 1944. He predeceased her Nov. 12, 1976, after 32 years of marriage. As a young woman, Hilda, worked in sardine factories and also picked blueberries. For the past nine years she had made her home at the Newport Inn where she made many friends. Her favorite thing to do was to go to McDonalds in the morning and meet with “the gang.” She will be remembered by many special friends. She loved her pets, Remdawg and Ozzie. Hilda is survived by her daughter and husband, Gail and Terry Curry of Plymouth; three sons and their wives, Leland and Beverly Hastey of East Hartford, Conn., Allan and Janine Hastey of Detroit, Robert and Rita Hastey of Newport; nine grandchildren, Lisa, Lauren, Patti, Angela, Darcey, Michele, Amy, Jana and Meghan; two stepgrand-children, Nicole and Devin; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-stepgrandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a nephew, Husky, who lived with her for several years while growing up. Her sister, Florence; and her brother, Gladwyn, predeceased her.
