NEWPORT – Grace B. Smart, 99, died peacefully Dec. 19, 2008, at her home. She was born May 30, 1909, in Dyer Brook, the daughter of Richard C. and Geneva B. (Friel) Brown. She was a graduate of Corinna Union Academy, Class of 1928. She also graduated from Farmington Normal School. She was married to Edgar M. Smart, who predeceased her. For many years she was employed at Church Goods, Pittsfield, as a presser. She was a former member of North Newport and Palmyra granges, and also a former member of the Farm Bureau. For more than 20 years, she volunteered at Meals for Me, Newport. She was a member of Newport and Corinna Senior Citizens. Grace was an active member of the “Scalawags,” entertaining many groups of people for several years. She is survived by four grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She will be remembered by special friends, Edna Chambers, Doreen Curry and Helen Baker. In addition to her husband, Edgar, she was predeceased by her son, Donald Smart; her brother, Percy Brown; and three sisters, Hilda Brown, Hazel Emerson and Ethel Hamlin.
