ORONO – Mary Stillman Zink, 92, died Dec. 30, 2008, at an Orono health care facility. She was born July 21, 1916, in Bridgeport, Conn., the daughter of George and Clara (Preston) Zink. Education was very important to Mary’s life. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University, her Master of Arts from Yale and her doctorate from Cornell, focusing on psychology. Mary worked as an executive for the Girl Scouts of America for 10 years, served as dormitory head resident at Elon College and Duke University, and was on the faculty of the University of Maine from 1960 to 1968, advancing from director of the university testing service to dean of women. She was a member of the first educational commission to visit China, the second American group to enter China after the ping-pong team, and was very proud of her journey. Mary was a longtime member of Church of Universal Fellowship, Orono, and active member for many years of American Association of University Women, Daughters of the American Revolution and Kennel Club. After her retirement, Mary was able to devote much time to her beloved dogs. She raised and showed Airedales and cardigan Welsh corgis into her 80s. She trained two therapy dogs which she took regularly to Eastern Maine Medical Center, and was honored by the Red Cross and the hospital for the hours of volunteer service she and her dogs spent calling on patients at the hospital. She is survived by her sister, Clara and her husband, Donald Cameron, of Ithaca, N.Y.; a niece, Mary Emily Cameron of Voorhees, N.J.; and four nephews, George Cameron of Ithaca, N.Y., Robert Cameron of Rocky Mount, N.C., Donald Cameron of Portsmouth, N.H., and Bruce Cameron of Derry, N.H. A service of remembrance will be held this summer at the Phippsburg family summer home. A service of Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono.
