ASHLAND – Gladys E. Savary, 97, died Jan. 4, 2009, at a Madawaska nursing home. She was born Sept. 5, 1912, in Nauwigewauk, New Brunswick, the daughter of John O. and Helen Emily (Rowley) Lister. She was educated in New Brunswick and Weymouth, Mass., and also received a nursing degree from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Gladys moved to Maine in 1933 and worked as a nurse at A.R. Gould Hospital, Presque Isle, for 15 years. She was a member of Union Congregational Church, Ashland, where she also taught Sunday school. She was a member and past worthy matron of Tillicum Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Ashland. Gladys is survived by one stepson, William K. Savary Jr. and his wife, Polly, of Lakeland, Fla.; three sons, John Savary, Charles Savary and his wife, Roberta, and Gary Savary, all of Ashland; three grandchildren, Peter Savary and his wife, Emily, of Manhattan, Kan., Ruth Ikasalo and her husband, Steven, of Pembroke, Mass., and Mark Savary of Chesapeak, Ohio; two great-grandsons, Mike and Mark Ikasalo; six stepgrandchildren and 15 great-stepgrandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William K. Savary Sr.; one brother, John and his wife, Millie; two sisters, Edna Howe and Helen Armstrong; and one stepgranddaughter, Donna. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Union Congregational Church, Sheridan Road, Ashland. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with Pastor Nathan Gardner officiating. A spring committal and interment will be at Ashland Municipal Cemetery.
