BANGOR – Raymond H. Arnold Jr., 84, passed away peacefully Jan. 10, 2009, at Maine Veterans’ Home. Raymond was born April 11, 1924, in Bangor, to the late Raymond Sr. and Louise (Gallagher) Arnold. Raymond lived in Bangor most of his life and attended Bangor schools before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served in the Army from Feb. 11, 1943 – Nov. 1, 1945. Raymond was a rifleman during the battles and campaigns of PO Valley, Rome Arno and North Apennines. He received several medals including the EAMETO Medal and the Meritorious Unit Badge. Raymond was a member of VFW Post No. 1761 and Maine State Employees Association. Raymond retired from Bangor School Department where he worked in maintenance for many years. Raymond is survived by his children, Norma Fogg and husband, Roderick, of Hampden, Gloria Clifford of Brewer and her companion, Jeff Welch, of Levant, Donald Arnold and wife, Robin, of Orono, Joleen Pedersen and husband, George, of Corinth, and John Arnold and wife, Lula, of Eddington; sister, Charlotte Andrews of Bangor; 16 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and his former wife, Phyllis Cray Arnold of Harmony. He was predeceased by brothers, Richard of Bangor and Arthur of Levant. Private interment will be at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Arrangements entrusted to Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden.
