EDDINGTON and NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Vernon “Smitty” G. Smith, 78, died peacefully Jan. 12, 2009, at his home in Florida with his wife at his side. He was born Feb. 8, 1930, in Bangor, “a little jewel,” of Pearl and Ruby (Crawford) Smith. Vernon attended Hampden schools, then joined the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. In 1954, he married Sara Jane Knox of Eddington. They resided most of their life in Eddington, where they raised their five boys. Vernon was an electrician and a member of IBEW No. 1253 and an active member of Burton Goode Sargent Chapter of Korean War Vets. He was a member of Greater Bangor Seventh-day Adventist Church. Vernon was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan and he enjoyed playing golf. He spent many summers with the family at Alamoosook Lake and after retirement, wintered in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Surviving are his wife, Sara Jane (Knox) Smith of Eddington and New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; four sons, Irvin Smith and his wife, Laurie, of Eddington, Jeffery Smith and his wife, Cindy, of Carmel, Russell Smith, and Gregg Smith and his wife, Terri, all of Eddington; seven grandchildren, Brent and his wife, Christie Theriault, Tyler Smith, all of Eddington, Samantha, Jason and Kimberly Smith, all of Carmel, Emily and Nicholas Smith of Eddington; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Taylor and Mathew, all of Eddington; four sisters, Ella Clewley of Bangor, Joan Potter of Levant, Gloria Sands of Bangor and Arlene Ogilvie and her husband, William, of Dedham; a brother, Wayne Smith of Hermon; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Andrew; a granddaughter, Erin Smith; and four brothers, Harold “Jack,” Joy, Gordon and Carl. Relatives and friends are invited to call 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where a service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, with the Rev. Arnold Schnell, pastor of Greater Bangor Seventh-day Adventist Church, officiating. Spring interment with military honors will be held at Meadowbrook Cemetery, Eddington. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at Brookings-Smith Reception Rooms, 55 South Main St., Brewer, after the service.
