BANGOR – Melvin Francis Newcomb, 78, died Jan. 10, 2009, at home after a long illness. He was born May 25, 1930, in Portland, the son of Charles and Madelyn Newcomb. He was a graduate of Portland High School, Class of 1948. Melvin served in the Air Force, Army Reserves and National Guard until his honorable discharge in 1965. He was the youngest athletic director at Portland Boys Club from 1947 to 1951. Mel worked as an institutional food salesman until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of Waterville Elks and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved to fish, golf and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He was predeceased by his father, Charles Newcomb; son, Stephen Newcomb; and granddaughter, Kelley Newcomb. Survivors include his mother, Madelyn Newcomb of Standish; wife, Lori Newcomb of Bangor; daughter, Patricia Fasulo of Falmouth; son, Jay Newcomb of New Baltimore, Mich.; four stepsons, Rusty, Saverio, Anthony Petrello and Larry Jackson; three stepdaughters, Linda MacDonald, Theresa Petrello and Sandra Jackson-Place; sister, Barbara and husband, E. Donald White, of Standish; several nieces and nephews, grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren; special friends, Timothy MacDonald and Ron Cormier; and his beloved cat, Francis. The family thanks Hospice of St. Joseph for their caring and kindness to Mel and his family. A service to celebrate Melvin’s life will be held 10 a.m. Jan. 26, at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating.
