HAMPDEN – Richard E. Farrell “Dick,” 85, died with dignity Jan. 14, 2009, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born May 21, 1923, in Chesuncook Village. Richard served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe invasions. He was proud to be one of the charter members of Hampden VFW. Richard retired from Husson College as the director of the physical plant in 1986, but continued working for himself. Dick was a family man and cherished any time spent with them. He loved berry picking, fiddleheading, gardening, baseball, woodworking with his grandson and always enjoyed visiting with his many friends. We can’t forget his whistling! Richard is survived by his wife, Ellen (Bickford) Farrell of Bangor; six daughters, Linda and Donald Quigley of Scarborough, Mary Ellen Farrell and Donald O’Halloran of Hampden, Betsy and Lance Labar of Laurel, Del., Leslie St. Louis of Bangor, Angela and David Davis of Salisbury, Md., and Susan and David Lee of Hampden; his sister, Diane Tozier of Winthrop; 10 grandchildren, Jill, Rae, Shannon, Mace, Kenzie, Joseph, Sarah, Autumn, Scott and Ian; nine great-grandchildren, three nieces; his lifelong friend, George “Willie” Bell; and numerous other friends. Dick had a special opportunity to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., where his name is listed on the memorial, and was escorted by his very dear friends, Anne and Ewen Farnham. He was predeceased by his brother, Gerald “Ted” Farrell. The family thanks Hospice of Eastern Maine and the Maine Veterans’ Home for his care and comfort. A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Hampden VFW. Gifts in Dick’s memory may be sent to Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
