A couple was arrested after an incident at an Orono grocery store.
The trouble began about noon Friday, when police were called to Bell’s IGA in Orono, police Sgt. Scott LaJoie said Monday.
When police arrived, they were told a store employee was holding Shirley Ann Clisham, 65, for alleged shoplifting. Meanwhile, her husband, John Clisham, 62, was being held down on the floor by two other employees.
LaJoie said employees had noticed empty packages on store shelves but were unable to figure out who was taking the contents.
On Friday, a worker saw Shirley Ann Clisham remove denture adhesive from its packaging and conceal it in one of her pockets. Clisham was taken to an office and confronted with the theft.
When John Clisham entered the store and learned his wife was accused of theft, he “went berserk,” LaJoie said.
A report by Officer Seth Burnes said John Clisham attempted to hit a female employee, then got into a tussle with two male workers who tried to subdue him, grabbing one by the shirt collar and hitting the other in the face with his elbow. After Clisham complained of chest pain and was let go, he kicked one of the workers in the face.
He was charged with disorderly conduct and assault. She was charged with theft by unauthorized taking.
Both Clishams, from Orono, have been released on bail and are scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 12. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)

Brewer police charged a Bangor husband and wife early Saturday with driving the same vehicle while under the influence.
Cpl. Paul Gauvin happened upon a car stuck on a snowbank outside a South Main Street bar, according to Brewer police Sgt. David Lord.
As Gauvin watched, he saw a man and a woman later identified as Ronnie James Cox, 44, and Deborah Lynn Cox, 42, taking turns behind the wheel of the car, which they were trying to work free of the snow.
As he approached the pair, he detected the smell of alcohol and conducted field sobriety tests, which both allegedly failed.
Afterward, Deborah Cox was taken to the Bangor Police Department and Ronnie Cox was taken to the Penobscot County Jail in separate police cars for breathalyzer tests. Both flunked and were sent to jail.
The Coxes, who have since been released on bail, are slated to appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Feb. 12. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)
