NEWPORT – Walter B. Hansen, 70, died Jan. 17, 2009, at his residence. He was born Aug. 20, 1938, in Elizabeth, N.J., a son of Bjorne and Ruth (Hamre) Hansen. He graduated from Union High School in 1956 and Academy of Aeronautics, Flushing, N.Y., in 1958. Walter served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1961. He was employed by Eastern Airlines from 1962 to 1963, and was self-employed until 1969. He then became director of aircraft maintenance at Union Carbide in 1969, McDonald’s Corp. in 1971, and Digital Corp. in 1982, retiring in 1998. He was a member and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church, Newport and was an active member and elder of Trinity Church, Bolton, Mass., before moving to Maine. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shirley of Newport; three sons and their wives, Scott and Paula of Gorham, Eric and Leslie of Bolton, Mass., and Mark and Jayne of Hartland; two daughters and their husbands, Bonnie and Darran Harvey of Carmel, and Kristie and Darren Seekins of Detroit; two brothers and their wives, Robert and Joan Hansen of Greenbrook, N.J., and Donald and Cathy Hansen of St. Charles, Mo.; 12 grandchildren, Lindsay, Daniel, Becca, Andrew, Heather, Clint, Bjorne, Brittany, Jaime, Morgan, Kelley and Katelyn; his stepmother, Mildred Hansen of New Jersey; and an aunt, Dagny Gertsen of New Jersey. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Calvary Baptist Church, Newport, with Pastor George Finnemore officiating. Spring burial will be in Hartland.
