ORONO – Zane Zenon Skalski, 91, who was born April 13, 1917, in Toledo, Ohio, to John and Jane Skalski died peacefully Jan. 18, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. He attended the University of Toledo and received a degree of doctor of medical dentistry from the University of Louisville in l943. He served as a dentist in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1949, and practiced dentistry for more than 50 years, first in Toledo, Ohio, and then in Orono. Zane was active in the Ohio and Maine dental associations and American Dental Association. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing and skiing. He skied with great pleasure into his late 80s and gave up golf only recently. He was a member of Penobscot Valley Country Club and Penobscot Valley Ski Club. He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Anne Steigerwald Skalski; his sister, Lucia Burrell; daughters, Patricia Kail and her husband, Harvey, Margaret Skalski and Lizabeth Skalski and her husband, Kim Hanson; sons, James Skalski and his wife, Pat, Martin Skalski, and Kenneth Skalski and his partner, Kaja Gam; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Val Skalski. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Toledo, Ohio. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced in Orono.
