ORONO – Jacob Bennett, 92, died Jan. 27, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 12, 1916, in Mansfield, Mass., the son of David and Sarah (Lichtenstein) Bennett. Jacob was born during the World War I, grew up during the Great Depression and served in the World War II. He then went to school on the GI bill, spent some years working as a private detective in the Boston area, and completed his Ph.D. He was an English professor at the University of Maine, Orono, for many years, and an active scholar, publishing his last article when he was 88. He was husband to Elizabeth, father to David and Richard, grandfather to Drew and Lissa, all with delight and loving grace. He packed much into his long life, greeting others and events with wise good humor. But his life was still not long enough for the many who loved him. He is survived by two sisters, his two sons and his two grandchildren. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. Family and friends are invited to meet 10:45 a.m. Sunday at the Superintendent’s office, State Street entrance. A service of Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, Orono.
