DOVER-FOXCROFT – John Packard Merrill, 59, went home to be with his Lord Jan. 27, 2009, in Dover-Foxcroft. He was born Jan. 31, 1949, in Dover-Foxcroft, the son of Dwight D. and Patricia (Packard) Merrill. John graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1967 and attended Paul Smith College, New York, for two years. He worked in the woods, as a Maine Game Warden, truck driver and was a master logger. He retired as a staff sergeant from the Maine Army National Guard in 2003, after 24 years of service with the 112th Medical Unit, 181st E Co. 120th Aviation. John was a member of United Baptist Church, Dover-Foxcroft. John is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 39 1/2 years, Barbara (Hitchcock) Merrill; a son, Andrew Merrill of Franklin, Ga.; a daughter, Julie Merrill of Saco; a son, Aaron Merrill of Newman, Ga.; and six grandchildren, Jynessa, TJ, Caleb, Auston, and Ruby Mae of Saco, and Asa John of Newman, Ga. He is also survived by his father, Dwight D. Merrill of Dover-Foxcroft; a brother, James Merrill and his wife, Gloria, of Addison; and a brother, Richard Merrill of Danville, N.H. John was predeceased by his mother; and a sister, Joan Martin. A funeral service to celebrate the life of John Packard Merrill will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Dover-Foxcroft United Baptist Church. Arrangements are in the care of Lary Funeral Home.
