PORTLAND, Maine — Maine is looking at the potential for record-breaking warmth Sunday, but the National Weather Service says it’ll be fleeting.

Forecaster Butch Roberts says the temperature hit 50 Sunday in Maine’s largest city, breaking the old record of 46 for the date, set in 1991. The last time the temperature hit 50 in Portland was back on Dec. 10.

The temperature in Bangor had reached 44 degrees around 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the NWS.

But Roberts says the warmth is only “a brief tease.”

He says temperatures will begin cooling down quickly with the arrival of a new front. Temperatures are expected to be in the teens or single digits overnight.
