WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The Hartford Hawks broke the game open, outscoring the University of Maine 20-2 during a six-minute span of the first half while breezing to an 82-34 America East women’s basketball victory Saturday at Chase Arena.
Hartford’s vaunted defense stifled the Black Bears, limiting them to 22 percent shooting and forcing 23 turnovers. The Hawks (13-8, 8-1 AE) took advantage, shooting 57 percent from the floor, including 34 points in the paint, and scoring 31 points as a result of the Bears’ turnovers.
Coach Cindy Blodgett’s UMaine squad (2-20, 0-9 AE) lost for the 16th straight time heading into Thursday night’s home game against New Hampshire.
Kristin Baker of Bingham led UMaine with eight points, all in the first half, along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. She had 10 turnovers.
Colleen Kilmurray provided six points and seven rebounds.
MaryLynne Schaefer led Hartford with 16 points, while Diana Delva contributed 15 points, six rebounds, five blocked shots and three steals. Erica Beverly added 11 points.
Baker scored five points, including a 3-pointer, early as UMaine trailed only 11-9. However, Hartford dominated after that.
UM-Fort Kent wins two
The University of Maine-Fort Kent claimed a pair of victories over the weekend with a 67-47 win over the University of Maine-Augusta on Saturday and an 80-41 victory over the University of Maine-Machias on Sunday.
In Saturday’s game at Fort Kent, Talisha Herring scored 22 points to lead the Bengals. Kristin Violette added 20 points.
Jen Lola scored 25 points to pace UM-Augusta.
In Sunday’s game at Machias, Herring scored a game-high 26 points to propel UMFK. Violette scored 18 points while Ashley Ames added 13 for the Bengals.
Carilla Fritz led UM-Machias with 14 points.

At Presque Isle, the University of Maine-Presque Isle outscored the University of Maine-Augusta 35-19 in the second half to capture the win Sunday.
Erica Davis had 21 points, 24 rebounds and five steals to lead UMPI. Megan Korhonen had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Karen Creighton added 13 points and 11 rebounds and Emily Moore scored 11 points.
Jennifer Lola paced UM-Augusta with 25 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals. Lola also made 17 of her 20 free throw attempts. Jessica Taylor chipped in 11 points.
