SKOWHEGAN – Delmar G. Cook, 87, formerly of Green-ville and Dover-Foxcroft, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at the VA Medical Center, Togus. He was born Sept. 10, 1921, in Willimantic, the son of Claude D. and Glenora (Gerald) Cook. Delmar served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific 3rd Fleet, where his ship shot down the last Japanese plane of the war. He graduated from Monson Academy; NYA Trade School, Dexter; Basic Engineering School U.S. Navy; and Barber College; Bangor. He was a member of VFW Post No. 3385, Dover-Foxcroft, for many years and Skowhegan Post No. 3198. He was also a life member of Disabled Veterans of America. Delmar lived in Greenville after the war, where he drove bus and trucks for many years. He played piano in dance bands and was a part time barber, before opening Del’s Barber Shop, Dover-Foxcroft, where he lived and barbered for 38 years. He had a love for antique automobiles. Survivors include his son, Maynard Cook and his wife, Ann, of Skowhegan; two grandsons, Marty Cook of Skowhegan and Mark Cook of Skowhegan; two great-grand-children, Trista Cook and Brent Cook, both of Skowhegan; one sister, Sharon Berger of Saco; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Estelle Belmont Cook; one brother, Carlton Cook; and one sister, Sandra McCrory. A private memorial service will be held. Burial will be held at Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Augusta, in the spring. Arrangements are entrusted to Smart & Edwards Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
