The city of Caribou and the Maine Winter Sports Center have teamed up to present a unique opportunity to cross country skiers of all ages.

The event, the Maine Invitational Ski Sprint, will be held on Feb. 28 and consists of a number of sprint races that will be held in the downtown business district.

The event features 250-meter and 500-meter races for middle school and high school racers, respectively, and a “Downtown Dash for the Cash” will seek to determine the fastest skiers in the competition. A total purse of $2,000 will be awarded in the dash.

Organizers will also award grants to the boys and girls middle school and high school teams that have the highest participation.

“One of the goals [of the organizing committee] is to attract the best skiers in Maine,” race director Bob Sprague said in a press release. “And the youth skiers are the future of the sport. The grant money to their schools provides an incentive for them to participate. On top of that, we’re really hoping to create a memorable ski experience for everyone who comes to the race.”

The races will take place in Lyndon Square in the center of the city, and skiers will have the chance to enjoy the festival nature of the event.

The event also commemorates the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of Caribou and will honor the rich skiing heritage of the area.
