CARIBOU – John A. Gustafson, 75, husband of the late Sandra (Kinney) Gustafson, died Feb. 20, 2009, in Caribou, after a long illness. He was born Sept. 19, 1933, in Michicot, Wis., son of Ralph and Ursula (Gloe) Gustafson. He was a graduate of Michicot High School and served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He then returned to Loring Air Force Base in 1955, where he met and married Sandra, Oct. 22, 1956. John worked for various trucking companies and later was a truck broker until his retirement. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, New England Teamsters and Henry B. Pratt Post No. 15 American Legion. He was a flagman at Spud Speedway for 10 years. John loved to spend weekends on Long Lake fishing and was an avid snowmobile racer. John is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Joyce Gustafson of Jacksonville, Fla., Bruce and Rhonda Gustafson of Caribou, Brian and Tammy Gustafson of Cape Coral, Fla., and Jay and Lynda Gustafson of Woodland; one brother, Leon Gustafson and his wife, Barbara, of Manitowoc, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Ronnie Gustafson; seven grandchildren, Johnathon, Bruce Jr., Bradd, Samantha and Holly Gustafson, Derek and Jared Fox; and three great-grandchildren, Aidan Merry, Jude and Kade Gustafson. He was predeceased by a brother, James Gustafson; two sisters, Betty Diedrich and Beverly Ploeckelmann; and a grandson, Ryan Gustafson. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the chapel of Mockler Funeral Home with the Very Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie, pastor, officiating. Spring interment will take place at Old Holy Rosary Cemetery. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of John may do so to Catholic Charities of Maine.
