MACHIAS – Richard Day Hayward, 80, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at his home, after a short battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 26, 1928, in Machias, the son of the late Lowell R. and Christine L. (Day) Hayward. Richard attended schools in Wesley. Mr. Hayward was a U.S. Army veteran and served his country in France, becoming honorably discharged with rank of private first class. Upon his discharge, he worked in the woods harvesting lumber and hauled lumber for many years. In 1960, he became employed by the U.S. Postal Service Machias as a highway contract mail driver. He was responsible for mail delivery to seven communities including Machias. In 1970, he was appointed custodial laborer, maintaining facilities at the U.S. Postal Office, Machias and several other offices in Washington County. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2004 with 44 years of service. Throughout the years, he owned many acres of blueberry land, cultivating, mowing, haying and manicured his tract for income. This provided many jobs to local area kids. He enjoyed deer hunting, picnics with his buddies, and loved to joke with family and friends. He shared 53 years of marriage with Thelma “Timmie” (Clemons) Hayward of Machias. In addition to his wife, family members include his children, Terry Hayward and fianc?e, Audre Watson, of Northfield, Sherry Preston and husband, Chris, of Machias, Ronny Hayward and wife, Laurie, of Marshfield, Ronette Hesseltine of Alton and Richard J. Hayward of Hampden; grandchildren, Whitney, Serena, Melissa, Michael, Meghan, Ryan, Erica and Drew; a great-grandson, Dustin; siblings, Vivian Leighton of Florida, Lowell R. Hayward Jr. of Machias and Barbara Gay of Machias; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be sadly missed by a close friend, John Hayman of Danforth. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two infant children, Jill Marie Hayward and Mary Lisa Hayward; and siblings, Julian Hayward and Angie Cox. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit with the family 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Cooper Street, Machias. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Centre Street Congregational Church, Centre Street, Machias, with Pastor Betty Duzen officiating.
