DEER ISLE – Percy L. Brown, Sr., 86, died Feb. 20, 2009, at his home. He was born June 14, 1922, in Sunset, son of Carrie Laura Brown. Percy graduated from McKinley High School, Deer Isle, in 1938 and an apprenticeship program at Bath Iron Works. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard a PC 1202. After the war, he returned to Deer Isle and established Percy L. Brown Plumbing and Heating, which he operated for more than 30 years. Percy also built and operated the first laundry mat on Deer Isle. Percy served as the local plumbing inspector for the town of Deer Isle for 50 years. He was a 60-year member and past member of Marine Lodge No. 122 AF & AM of Deer Isle, past patron of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 136 and a member of American Legion Rodney Stinson Post No. 102, Stonington. After his retirement, he moved to an overgrown farm he owned on Goose Cove Road, Sunset, where he built his own house and spent many years clearing the land and enjoying logging with his horses. He volunteered at the Meals for ME program in Deer Isle. He also enjoyed the many farm animals he raised, and was an avid gardener, always having green peas from his garden for the Fourth of July. Percy is survived by his wife, Anamae “Anne” Brown of Sunset; one daughter, Bonita Poitras and husband, Arthur; two sons, Burton Brown and Percy “Joe” Brown Jr. and his companion, Diane Davis, all of Deer Isle; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one stepdaughter, Pamela Proch of Pennsylvania. Percy will be missed by many, including his beloved dachshund, Festus; and cats, Katie and Forest. In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his first wife, Leatrice Elaine Brown; a great-grandson, Joseph Lane Brown; and one stepdaughter, Karen O’Brien of Florida. A memorial service will be announced in the spring. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sunset. Donations in his memory may be made to Marine Lodge No. 122, P.O.
