BELFAST – Florence Annie Wilcox Goodwin died in her sleep March 2, 2009. She was born July 25, 1908, in Masardis, to Martin and Mabel (White) Wilcox. Florence graduated from Crosby High School in 1927 and attended Beal College, Bangor. Florence had a green thumb and kept numerous flower and vegetable gardens at the farm on Back Belmont Road, which she shared with her husband, Carl. Florence loved bird watching. Florence enjoyed spending time at the camp, which her husband, Carl built in 1953 on Half Moon Pond, North Searsport. At camp, Florence would find great pleasure in challenging anyone to a game of cribbage by the light of a kerosene lantern. Florence was an avid reader even when her eyesight was compromised by macular degeneration. A day never went by when Florence wasn’t able to complete The Daily Crossword in the Bangor Daily News. Florence would share her large collection of family photographs with anyone who was willing to sit with her. Even after Florence’s memory was challenged by Alzheimer’s disease she could still tell you the name of everyone in every picture. Florence enjoyed going to “dinner” at Dockside Restaurant, where she was fondly known as “Grammie.” It is fitting that Florence died within days of news commentator Paul Harvey whose radio show you could find her listening to at the kitchen table. Florence celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her family and friends in July 2008. Florence was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Carl Goodwin, in 1996; her brothers, John, Leonard and Henry; a sister, Margaret McKeen; a granddaughter, Roxanne Moore; and a grandson, Benjamin E. Moore III. Florence is survived by her sister, Lois Young and husband, Everett “Pete,” of Swanville; daughter, Wilma “Billie” Davis Moore of Northport; granddaughters, Susan Mickalowski of Bangor, and Joanne Jameson and husband, Jerry, of North Searsport; grandsons, Wayne Moore of Bangor and Carl Goodwin-Moore of Belfast; and her granddog, Butch. Florence is also survived by several nieces and nephews who knew her fondly as “Aunt Flo.” The family thanks the staff at Tall Pines Community of Belfast for the care they gave Florence during her final weeks of life. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Florence’s memory to one of the following charities: Maine Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 170 U.S. Route 1, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105; Pine Tree Society, P.O. Box 518, Bath, ME 04530; or Waldo County YMCA, 157 Lincolnville Ave., Belfast, ME 04915.
