QUINCY, Mass., and MILBRIDGE – Phyllis (Dow) Pollak, 88, formerly of Milbridge, passed away Feb. 27, 2009, at John Adams Healthcare Center, Quincy, Mass. She was born Feb. 9, 1921, in Milbridge, daughter of the late Charles H. and Olive (Merchant) Dow. Phyllis grew up in the Milbridge area. She received her nursing training in Bangor and Boston. Phyllis worked as a registered nurse in Maine, Washington, D.C., and New York City, where she lived for many years. Phyllis worked with one of the first hospices that was established in New York. She was a long-standing member of American Nurses Association. Phyllis enjoyed vacationing in Maine and collecting local crafts from the area. Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hefler and husband, William, of Quincy, Mass.; two brothers, Charles “Buck” Dow and wife, Alice, of Brooks, and Lawrence Dow and wife, Irene, of Milbridge; three sisters-in-law, Marilyn, Norma and Flora Dow; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John Pollak, in 1988; and three brothers, Elmer, Earl and Douglas Dow. Visiting hours will be held 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, March 5, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge, where a service will be held immediately after.
