A Brewer man was arrested by local police on Monday after he apparently threatened to kill his landlady if she didn’t marry him, Sgt. David Lord said Thursday.

Christopher Dougherty, 44, also pushed his landlady during the 3 p.m. incident and was charged with criminal threatening, terrorizing and assault, all Class D misdemeanor crimes.

Dougherty was taken to Penobscot County Jail after his arrest and was required to get a psychological evaluation before being released on bail, Lord said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)

A University of Maine student from Marshfield, Mass., was arrested last week after Orono police found a bong and stolen traffic signs in his SUV and several ounces of marijuana and an array of smoking implements in his dorm room.

As a result, Cody Stevens Knight, 19, was charged with unlawful furnishing of and trafficking in marijuana, sale and use of drug paraphernalia and receiving stolen property, Sgt. Scott Wilcox said this week. He said Knight, who since has been released on bail, is scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on April 30.

Knight came to the attention of Orono police about 11 p.m. Feb. 26 when Officer Edward Leskey pulled him over because the rear license plate light on his Nissan Xterra was out.

When Leskey approached the vehicle, which had its driver side window down, he detected the strong odor of burned marijuana. Leskey called in Officer Wilfred King and Wilcox for assistance, Wilcox said.

A search of the SUV turned up a bong in Knight’s backpack, a stolen stop sign belonging to the Connecticut Department of Transportation and a 35 mph sign of unknown origin. Wilcox said Knight acknowledged the signs were his. Though police did not find any pot in the vehicle, Wilcox said Knight admitted that he and two passengers had been smoking a joint just before the traffic stop.

Wilcox said police then asked Knight for consent to search his dorm room, which he granted twice as he led them to it. There, police found an array of bongs and pipes, as well as grinders and presses.

“There was quite a collection,” Wilcox said.

When they checked the minifridge, police found a gallon-size zip-lock bag containing 4 ounces of pot. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)
