CASTINE – Woodrow P. Bakeman, 90, passed away March 5, 2009, at Penobscot Nursing Home. He was born Nov. 10, 1918, in Castine, to the late Leon and Ella (Morey) Bakeman. Woody graduated from Castine High School and served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II. When he returned from the service he went to work as a carpenter and for the U.S. Postal Service driving the mail route from Castine, Penobscot and Bucksport for 17 years. Later in life he was a landscaper before he retired. Woody was a very kind person and always put others needs before his own. He enjoyed lobstering, clamming and fishing and always looked forward to going “up-country” with Eddie Wardwell and other friends, fishing and hunting. He is survived by his brother, Norwood and his wife, Teresa, of Penobscot; his sisters, Lena Bakeman and Bessie Mixer of Castine, Lenora Brockelbank of Orland and Julia Weaver of Thomaston; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Castine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Woodrow Bakeman may be sent to the Activities Department, Penobscot Nursing Home, 12 North Penobscot Road, Penobscot, ME 04476. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
