PRESQUE ISLE – Camilla R. Cronkite, 88, wife of Lawrence S. Cronkite, passed away unexpectedly Friday evening, March 20, 2009, at a Presque Isle health care facility. She was born Sept. 24, 1920, in Fort Fairfield, daughter of William and Sophie (Caron) LeVasseur. She was a graduate of Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1940, and was married to Lawrence S. Cronkite, June 16, 1947. She had been a resident of Presque Isle for 61 years, where she was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Presque Isle. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cronkite was predeceased by four brothers, Dewey, Saul, Edgar and Paul LeVasseur; and five sisters, Pauline Stone, Norma McKenney, Dorothy Beaulieu, Rena Shaw and Viola LeVasseur. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lawrence S. Cronkite of Presque Isle; five sons, Sam Cronkite and his wife, Carol, of St. Augustine, Fla., Paul Cronkite of Memphis, Tenn., John Cronkite and his wife, Lucian, of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Thomas Cronkite and his wife, Suzanne, of Hanover, N.H., and Patrick Cronkite and his wife, Barbara, of Palm Bay, Fla.; six grandchildren, Joanna Houde of Exeter, N.H., Sammy Cronkite of Knoxville, Md., Susan Cronkite of Watertown, Mass., Matthew and Megan Cronkite, both of Hanover, N.H., and Elizabeth Mannix of Palm Bay, Fla.; four great-grandchildren, Ben, Nathan, Nicholas and Emily; one sister-in-law, Muriel “Pat” LeVasseur of Presque Isle; numerous nieces and nephews. In keeping with Camilla’s wishes, there will be no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Main Street, Presque Isle, with the Rev. Raymond Morency, celebrant. Spring interment will take place at St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Cronkite to Hematology/Oncology Clinic, care of Aroostook Cancer Care Office, 140 Academy St., Presque Isle, ME 04769. Envelopes will be available at the funeral Mass. Arrangements are in the care of Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield.
