YORK – James F. Upton, 74, co-founder of Incoterm Corp., passed away Saturday morning, March 21, 2009, at his home overlooking the sunrise and the ocean in York, after a short battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 2, 1934, in Bangor, son of J. Stewart Upton and Ila (Ryer) Upton. He leaves his loving wife of 51 years, Barbara “Pepi” Prince Upton; three sons, David and his wife, Marianne, of Shrewsbury, Mass., Craig and his wife, Keri, of Chesapeake, Va., and Kirk and his wife, Laurel, of Charlton, Mass.; and his former daughter-in-law, Catherine. He also leaves five beloved grandchildren, Cassandra, Chelsey, Sarah, Jennifer and Jefferson. Jim lived in Bangor until midway through high school. In 1950 he and his family moved to Framingham, Mass., where he graduated from high school and excelled in several sports. He graduated from Bates College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1957 as an electrical engineer. He and Pepi settled in Sudbury, Mass., where they spent 20 years raising their three sons. After working for 10 years at Raytheon Co., he and his business partner co-founded Incoterm Corp., an early pioneer in intelligent computer terminals used in airline and banking applications. The company was later sold to Honeywell in 1978 and Jim retired to Maine shortly thereafter. In York he was a former trustee of York Library, and a member of York Golf and Tennis Club and York Harbor Reading Room. He and Barbara spent many years sharing time between their home in York and a winter home on Callawassie Island, South Carolina. He enjoyed many years of sailing along the Maine coast. He was an avid reader, a talented photographer and an intrepid traveler – having visited an extensive set of the world’s most interesting destinations. Throughout the past 40 years, Jim was never happier than when sitting with friends and family on the lawn or porch of the lake-front cottage in southern Maine. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York St., York. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
