LIMESTONE – Fred M. Barnes, 94, passed away, Thursday morning, April 30, 2009, at a Caribou nursing facility, after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 6, 1915, in Fort Fairfield, son of Leslie and Josephine (Devoe) Barnes. He was educated in Limestone schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had been employed in the potato farming industry by various farmers, including Morris Farms, Limestone, for many years, was a life member of American Legion O’Bar-Phair Post, Limestone, and was a communicant of St. Louis Catholic Church, Limestone. In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by four brothers, Thomas, Clarence, Percy and Orin Barnes; and two sisters, Stella Powers and Alta Johndro. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including his caregiver for many years, Thomas Barnes and his wife, Peggy, of Limestone. In keeping with Fred’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral Mass. A graveside service of committal with full military honors will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, July 20, at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Barnes to his family, care of Thomas Barnes, 10 West Limestone Road, Limestone, ME 04750. Arrangements have been entrusted to Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield.
