BIRCH HARBOR – Mildred (Chipman) Crowley, 77, went home to be with the Lord May 1, 2009, with her family at her side after a long battle with cancer. She was born Oct. 3, 1931, in Milbridge, the daughter of Edgar and Minnie (Beal) Chipman. The family moved to Bunker’s Harbor in June 1940. Mildred attended and graduated high school in Winter Harbor. She enjoyed the company of her family and loved doing for them and for others. She was bookkeeper for Bay State Lobster Co., Bunker’s Harbor, and she also worked at Chipman’s Grocery, Birch Harbor. She enjoyed talking to all the customers that came in to the store. She was a woman that was a friend to everyone that ever met her. Mildred loved children and always loved having them around. She was involved in Girl Scouts, and taught Sunday school and Bible school class at the local church. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of Rubie Chapter No. 31, where she was worthy matron and when Rubie Chapter joined with Alcyone Chapter of Milbridge, she also held an office until she was no longer able to attend. She always looked forward to her monthly meetings at Star and missed it so much when she was no longer able to attend. She also looked forward to the springtime when she could do her planting. She enjoyed her flowers and her vegetable garden. Mildred is survived by her daughter, Patty Carter and her husband, Howard, of Ellsworth; her grandchildren, Frank Miller Jr. of Birch Harbor and Rachel MacKenzie and her husband, Scott, of Trenton; her great-grandchildren, Evan and Lydia MacKenzie; her brothers, Avery Chipman and his wife, Estelle, Leamon Chipman, Maynard Chipman and his wife, Annabelle, George Chipman and his wife, Becky, Herb Chipman, and Albert Chipman and his wife, Betty; sister-in-law, Alice Chipman; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Her mother and father, Edgar and Minnie Chipman; brothers, Roger and Vinton Chipman; and a very special sister-in-law, Kathleen Chipman, predeceased her. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at Bible Baptist Church, Route 1, Hancock.
