BANGOR – Sallie Wheeler Tarbell, 92, wife of the late Frank Leo Downey Jr. and the late Eaton Weatherbee Tarbell, died May 17, 2009, in Bangor. Born Sallie Wheeler, Oct. 17, 1916, in Portland, she was the daughter of Elzada Maria (Drummond) Wheeler. She graduated from Wheaton College and was involved in numerous community organizations in South Portland and later in Bangor. Surviving her are three children, Sallie Tucker (Downey) Jones, Peter Wheeler Downey and Robin Wheeler Tarbell; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Wheeler Downey. Two children, Alexander Frost Tarbell and Gridley Weatherbee Tarbell II, predeceased her. There will be a private family service. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. Arrangements are being provided by Brookings-Smith, Bangor.
