HOULTON – David J. Haney Sr., formerly of South Portland, died May 19, 2009, after a long illness. He was born Dec. 19, 1940, in Benedicta, son of the late Paul and Marjorie Whitten Haney. He was educated in the South Portland school system and graduated in 1959 from South Portland High School. He played basketball in high school and had a lifelong love of sports. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force Military Police, serving in the United Kingdom, Germany and Thailand, as well as stateside. When he left the service, he and his wife, the late Amporn Intaraban, settled in South Portland to raise their family. He worked for many years for Weyerhouser of Westbrook. After a back injury, he owned and operated his own locksmith business, worked for American Legion Post No. 17, and then worked security at W.H. Nichols and Fairchild, retiring early because of health issues. David is survived by his four children, Rhonda Wimer and Robert of Little Compton, R.I., Wanda Binette and Scott of Redmond, Wash., Marjorie Graff of Portland and David J. Haney Jr. of Nashua, N.H.; and five grandchildren, Robert, Patrick and Meghan Graff and Nicole and William Binette. He is also survived by his sisters, Paula Johnson of South Portland, Laraine Baker of Lisbon, Sharon Bash of Arlington, Va., and Kathleen Libby of Center Conway, N.H.; his brother, Michael Haney Sr. and Gloria of Ellenton, Fla.; plus several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 22, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited 10:15 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at the chapel, with a 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. John the Evangelist Church, 611 Main St., South Portland. Interment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. After the Mass, friends and family are invited to gather at St. John the Evangelist Parish Hall for a period of fellowship and refreshment.
