FARMINGDALE – George A. Jones, 62, died Friday, May 15, 2009, at the West Roxbury Campus of VA Medical Center in Massachusetts, after a long illness. He was born Nov. 27, 1946, in Gardiner, son of the late Reuben M. Jones and Alberta G. (Atkins) Jones. George graduated from Gardiner Area High School in 1965, and then served in the Navy. He later graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1973. He was a member of Cox Memorial United Methodist Church, Hallowell; a member and past vice commander of American Legion Post No. 73, Corinna; a member of Abnaki Girl Scout Council of Brewer for more than 16 years; and volunteered at William S. Cohen Community Center, Hallowell. George was predeceased by his parents; grandparents, George A. Atkins and Esther (Pushard) Atkins; and brother, Timothy Jones. He is survived by his daughter, Victoria Janousek and her husband, Timothy, of Sanford; son, Anthony Jones of Pittsfield; two grandsons, Benjamin and Matthew Janousek; three sisters, Gail Grasse and her husband, Normie, of West Gardiner, Susan Hill of Augusta and Cindy Buckmore of Gardiner; aunt, Jennie Breed of Gardiner; cousin, Wendy Vigue of Hallowell; along with several other cousins, nieces and nephews. George’s family thanks Dr. Pathak and the nurses of the dialysis unit at Togus VA Medical Center for the wonderful care and treatment that he received during his illness. A graveside committal service will take place noon Thursday, May 28, at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Memorial donations may be made to Cox Memorial United Methodist Church, Hallowell.
