PORTLAND – Bernard Eugene Chase of Dover-Foxcroft, Brewer and Portland, was surrounded by his family when he passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born Sept. 9, 1943, in Dover-Foxcroft, the son of Duane Arthur and Olevia Bagley Chase. He graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1961. He played basketball and baseball in high school and had a lifelong love of sports. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Bentley College, Waltham, Mass., in 1965. Bernie enjoyed his work and spent much of his career in accounting and finance. His career began as an accountant at Arthur Young Co., Boston and controller at Dead River Co., Bangor. He then spent nearly 20 years at Seaway Communications, Bangor, where he served as the CFO. He also had entrepreneur spirit and had many business ventures including Chase Brothers, Carrabassett Valley. He enjoyed working with his hands, which he combined with his love for numbers by buying, fixing and selling homes. He was a strong, good man with a generous heart. Bernie’s life was his family and friends. Bernie was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, James P. Chase. He is survived by his four children, David E. Chase of Steuben, Kristin Chase Duffy and her husband, Bill, of Portland, Julie Chase Connett and her husband, Steve, of Newport, R.I., and Jessica L. Chase of San Francisco; three grandchildren, Patrick and Kathryn Duffy of Portland and Benjamin Connett of Newport, R.I. He is also survived by his brothers, J. William Chase of Vista, Calif., Richard D. Chase of Golden, Colo., David A. Chase of Dedham, Daniel E. Chase of Fredericksburg, Texas, and Thomas J. Chase of Florida; and many loved nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his former wife of 25 years, Lorraine Chase McCabe and her husband, Terrance F. McCabe Sr., of Augusta. Visiting hours will be held noon-1 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, where prayers will be recited 1 p.m. by the Rev.
