PORTLAND, Maine — The University of Southern Maine is eliminating four full-time jobs and cutting hours of 17 other positions to help close a $4.1 million revenue shortfall during the new fiscal year.
USM’s Center for Real Estate Education, which had two of the full-time jobs, will close July 1 as a result of the cuts.
The Portland Press Herald quotes a letter from USM President Selma Botman to employees as saying the 32-year-old center has delivered a valuable service to the community but the university’s top priority is programs of direct benefit to students.
The other two eliminated positions are a press operator and a director in the Office of Learning Foundations. Jobs with reduced hours include eight classified staff positions, eight professional staff positions and one faculty position.
