CAPE ELIZABETH – Stanley William Sontz, 68, passed away June 23, 2009, surrounded by his wife of 46 years, Marlene (Jaffe) Sontz, and his loving family at his side, at home. He was born Feb. 12, 1941, in Lynn, Mass., son of Max and Esther Sontz. He was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, Class of 1959. He was vice president of Max Sontz Co. of Lynn, Mass., with his brothers and in 1974 opened Union Air Conditioning, Portland, where he worked until retirement. He dedicated his life to his wife, children and most of all, adored playing and treating his grandchildren like royalty. His passion was collecting firearms. He was past treasurer, chief range safety officer and member of the board of directors and life member of Scarborough Fish & Game for many years. He served as a board member of Osteopathic Hospital/Brighton Medical Center for 18 years and also served on the Maine Health Osteopathic Heritage Foundation. He was a member of Cape Elizabeth Fire Police since 1992, and recently he held the position of lieutenant. Another hobby was fireworks, and as a licensed pyrotechnician, he assisted LP Murray with fireworks shows. He was a member of the Pyrotechnician Guild International and a Pyrotechnician Guild International certified fireworks display shooter. He was predeceased by his brothers, Phil Sontz of Louisville, Ky., Hyman Sontz and Charles Sontz of Marblehead, Mass. Surviving are his wife, Marlene H. Sontz of Cape Elizabeth; son, Mark and daughter-in-law, Mary Sontz, of Portland; daughter, Danielle and son-in-law, Kevin Little, of Carmel; grandchildren, Andrew Sontz, Elizabeth Sontz, Mackenzie Little and Sophie Little; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sidney and Cynthia Sontz, Harold and Alice Sontz of Swampscott, Mass., and Edith Sontz of Salem, Mass. Stanley and his family want to thank Dr. James Wasserman and the staff at Maine Nephrology Associates, and all the devoted staff of Beacon Hospice, Annette Lemek, Amy Stocks, Marie Painter, Pam Boule and Cindy Morris. Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral service 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at Congregation Bet Ha’am, 81 Westbrook St., South Portland. Internment will be after at Temple Beth-El Memorial Park. Shiva will be observed after the funeral Thursday, 2-5 p.m. Friday, and 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the home of Mark and Mary Sontz, 12 Frost Hill Road, Portland; 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the home of Stanley and Marlene Sontz, 17 Maple Lane, Cape Elizabeth; and 2-4 p.m. Monday and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Danielle and Kevin Little, 84 Plymouth Road, Carmel. In lieu flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Congregation Bet Ha’am Building Fund or National Rifle Association. Arrangements by The Jewish Funeral Home, Portland.
