AUGUSTA – Helen Flewelling Ames, 90, died Saturday, June 20, 2009, after a long illness. She was born Feb. 28, 1919, in Easton, the daughter of James N. and Gladys M. Flewelling Porter. She graduated from Easton High School, Class of 1937. After her children were grown, she was employed by Vahlsing, Inc. and in 1971, was employed in the Easton public school’s cafeterias, retiring in 1983. She married Adonis Medford Ames, June 28, 1939, in Easton. Mr. and Mrs. Ames farmed and lived in Easton until moving to Augusta in 1996. They spent winters in Live Oak, Fla., from 1983 until his death June 27, 2003. Helen was a strong-willed and independent woman who always displayed a caring interest in family, friends and community. She is survived by two daughters, Eileen Tompkins and her husband, Gerald, of Grand Forks, N.D., and Patricia Connors of Manchester; a sister, Irma Thompson of Presque Isle; four grandsons, Kurt Tompkins and his wife, Rosemary, of Devils Lake, N.D., and Daren Tompkins, M.D. and his wife, Kerry, of Oshkosh, Wis., Gregory Connors of Belgrade and Christopher Connors of Los Angeles; and five great-grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at Estes Park Cemetery, Easton.
