Jason Harvey and Ed Meo have been named co-coaches of the Husson University golf team, Eagles athletic director Cindy Connelley announced Wednesday.
The duo replaces Bruce MacGregor, who stepped down in April after many years leading the squad.
Harvey, who also is Husson’s head baseball coach in addition to his duties in the admissions office, will oversee the Eagles golf program. Meo will handle day-to-day operations, according to a press release.
Both men played golf at Husson.
Harvey, the defending Paul Bunyan Amateur Golf Tournament Champion, is a Bucksport native who played basketball, baseball and golf for the Eagles before graduating in 2007 with a degree in business administration/sports management.
Meo, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., moved to Maine in 1995. He attended Husson during 2008-09 and played for the Eagles at the NCAA Division III national tournament.
Meo will travel with the team and work with players on specifics of the game.
“It’s exciting to have two outstanding individuals continue our well-established golf program,” Connelley said. “Both Jason and Ed are individuals of highest integrity and both will contribute greatly to the Husson athletic mission.”
Husson opens practice Aug. 26.
Duke women to play at UMaine
While the University of Maine women’s basketball team has not released its 2009-10 schedule, one notable nonconference opponent has been locked up.
Black Bears coach Cindy Blodgett confirmed Wednesday that Coach Joanne P. McCallie’s Duke Blue Devils will visit Orono for a game on Dec. 21.
Blodgett will welcome back her former UMaine coach, who will be in her third season with the nationally-ranked Blue Devils.
The contest is part of a home-and-home arrangement worked out by Blodgett and McCallie, who will be honored during her visit for her contributions to UMaine women’s basketball.
“That’s the whole reason I wanted to schedule that game,” Blodgett said of recognizing McCallie. “I have no idea why she hadn’t been brought back to Maine sooner. I’m certainly pleased that the stars are aligned and we are able to do that.”
Last season, Duke humbled UMaine 98-31 in Durham, N.C.
Wheaton’s Meehan honored
Iris Meehan of Wheaton College recently was named a Scholar All-America honorable mention by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
The Bar Harbor resident, who will be a senior in the fall, was recognized for the second straight year after posting a grade point average of at least 3.5.
Meehan helped Wheaton post the fourth best GPA among New England Division III schools during the fall and spring semesters.
