People stored their umbrellas, put down their convertible tops, ironed their shorts and T-shirts and basked in a rare sunny, warm day Thursday.

The Bangor area awoke to sun for what seemed like the first time in weeks. Temperatures hit 75 degrees by 3 p.m., and for a few hours it actually felt like summer.

“Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,” said Rabbi Darah Lerner, singing the Beatles song after finishing lunch at downtown cafe Giacomo’s. “I appreciated the morning blessing that talks about the guy who creates light. Part of the reason I came downtown to this spot was because I knew they had outdoor seating.”

June’s record-setting rain — 8.12 inches in Bangor, according to the National Weather Service — seems so far to have given way to more precipitation in July.

Rich Norton of the weather service office in Caribou, said Bangor so far this month has received 2.38 inches of rain. The month’s normal-to-date precipitation is 0.88 inches.

There have been just two July days with no precipitation, Norton said. There were eight days with no precipitation in June.

There was no precipitation Thursday afternoon in the skies above the deck of the Sea Dog restaurant — only blue skies and the occasional puffy cloud as diners reveled in the sun.

Orrington residents Joe Costello and Heather Bemis, who lunched there Thursday, were hoping the good weather stays around for the weekend.

“We own a boat and it’s been collecting dust,” Costello said. “We’re getting ready to go camping so hopefully we can put it to use.”

Today looks to be another rain-free day, Norton said, with a repeat appearance of the sun and forecast highs in the lower 80s. Saturday is also expected to be sunny, but with a chance of precipitation overnight.

Sunday could bring clouds and rain, again.

Lerner has missed one simple summer activity during the recent stretch of gray weather.

“I just like walking,” she said. “I just like being out and about, whether it’s coming downtown to listen to music, walking to see neighbors, going to and from [Congregation Beth El]. I can do those when it’s gloomy, but it’s just not as much fun.”
