CHARLESTON, Maine — A 23-month-old boy drowned in a stream earlier this month in Charleston after wandering away from his bed during the night and climbing out a window, state police said.

Dominic Nee was discovered missing when his parents woke up in the morning, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

“They had put him to bed in a bunk bed. There was a safety gate in place to help prevent him from falling out,” McCausland said Thursday. “Somehow, he got through that and got out a window.”

The toddler was found facedown in a small stream beside the driveway. The accident took place on July 8.

The state medical examiner’s office has ruled the death a drowning. State police investigate all deaths of children under age 3.

Dominic was the son of Michael and Carolyn Nee. The family was staying temporarily in a camper trailer on the property of Michael Nee’s parents, Diane and Edward Nee, while waiting to move into a new home in Milo.
