HUGH C. LEIGHTON BLUE HILL – Hugh C. Leighton, 82, died peacefully July 18, 2009, at an Ellsworth hospital, after a lengthy illness. He was born Jan. 23, 1927, in Blue Hill, son of Hugh A. and Annah D. Leighton. Hugh attended schools in Blue Hill, leaving George Stevens Academy to enter the U.S. Army during World War II, as did many at that time. Returning home, he held various jobs, including town constable, deputy sheriff, working at St. Regis Paper Co. and Webber Cove Boat Yard, before becoming a Maine State Liquor inspector, where he retired after 25 years of service. His final years before retirement were made special to him by working with his partner and friend, Dan True. He dearly loved time spent at the family camp on Flanders Pond, Sullivan, with his family, friends and special neighbors, the Walter Moore family. Hugh is survived by his very devoted wife, Eleanor A. Leighton of Blue Hill; daughter, Jackie and her husband, Eugene Farrin, of Surry; son, Randall Leighton of Blue Hill; sister, Phyllis Pemberton; brother, Sheldon Leighton, both of Blue Hill; along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; infant sister, Florence in 1935; infant brother, James in 1929; and brother, Harold in 2003. Graveside services with military honors will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, at Mountain View Cemetery, Blue Hill, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blue Hill Fire Co. or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements by the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bucksport.
