Jared Holowaty has been named the head baseball coach at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash.
Holowaty, 30, spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach under Steve Trimper at the University of Maine.
It will be the first head coaching position for the Connecticut native, who was chosen from a pool of 160 applicants by the NCAA Division III institution.
“He is a young man of outstanding character with a drive and passion for the game of baseball,” Whitman athletic director Dean Snider said in a press release. “The keys to his coaching philosophy are quality and depth of character, work ethic and accountability, and his commitment to excellence extends from the baseball field to the classroom.”
Holowaty, the son of veteran Eastern Connecticut State coach Bill Holowaty, served as UMaine’s hitting instructor and infield coach. He was also instrumental in attracting highly regarded recruiting classes to Orono as the Black Bears’ recruiting coordinator.
“What sets him apart from others is his ability to teach the game,” Trimper said. “Whitman College just added one of the gems in the college baseball coaching profession.”
Holowaty is a graduate of Eastern Connecticut, where he majored in economics. He was a four-year starter, earning All-New England first-team honors as a senior, when the Warriors won the NCAA Division III national championship. He twice gaining All-Little East Conference first-team recognition as an outfielder.
Prior to UMaine, he spent one year each as an assistant coach at The College of New Jersey (2003-04) and ECSU (2002-03).
“Our foundation will be outstanding student-athletes who want to compete, both athletically and academically, at the national level,” Holowaty said. “I look forward to building a program that is competitive at the highest level.”
