BANGOR, Maine — A Florida golf pro who had been scheduled to tee off in the Greater Bangor Open at 8 a.m. Thursday spent the morning in Penobscot County Jail instead of on the greens of the Bangor Municipal Golf Course.
Mark Alizzeo, 36, of Palm Coast, Fla., was arrested shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday by Bangor police at Hollywood Slots, 500 Main St., after he refused to leave the facility, according to court documents.
He was charged with criminal trespass, a Class D crime, and disorderly conduct, a Class E crime.
Alizzeo pleaded no contest Thursday afternoon in 3rd District Court in Bangor to disorderly conduct and was ordered to pay a $250 fine. In a plea agreement with the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office, the criminal trespass charge was dropped.
He is not allowed to return to Hollywood Slots.
The Florida man faced up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000 on the Class D charge and up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 on the Class E charge.
He was released after his court appearance.
Alizzeo’s problems began Wednesday afternoon when he was asked to leave the golf course, according to head pro Brian Enman. Alizzeo was eliminated from Thursday’s schedule.
“He was boisterous and had been drinking some beer,” Enman said Thursday afternoon. “He was just behaving irrationally.”
Alizzeo left the golf course and checked into the hotel at Hollywood Slots sometime later in the day. Security at the facility called Bangor police about 10 p.m. Wednesday and described Alizzeo as intoxicated, disorderly and uncooperative, according to court documents.
The Florida man told police that because he was sponsored by Hollywood Slots in the golf tournament, he should not have to leave. Police arrested Alizzeo after he was given the alternative of gathering his belongings and leaving the facility or going to jail. He declined to leave, according to court documents.
Hollywood Slots spokesman Jason Birney said Thursday that the company had not sponsored Alizzeo.
The gaming facility is a sponsor of the Greater Bangor Open, Birney said.
