ORONO – Earl “Mike” R. Leavitt, 80, died peacefully July 25, 2009, with his daughters at his bedside at a Bangor health care facility. He was born May 29, 1929, in Old Town, son of Louis and Edna (Pelletier) Leavitt. He was a graduate of Old Town High School, Class of 1948, and loved planning and attending the many reunions with his fellow classmates. Upon graduation he entered the military, serving in the U.S. Army. When his enlistment ended he returned to Old Town and began working at the Old Town Mill, where he spent 40 years, retiring in 1984. Mike was a sports enthusiast; he loved watching both the Red Sox and New England Patriots. His favorite pastime was playing cribbage. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Cecelia “Minnie” Leavitt; by his only sister, Rita Leavitt Duplessis; and by his son-in-law, Scott Earley. He is survived by his four children, Kim Earley of Orono, Linda Leavitt McCullen and her husband, John, of Brewer, James Leavitt of Old Town and Thomas Leavitt of Florida; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Additionally, he leaves behind special friends, Judy Desmond and family, Ed and Nancy Higgins, and Debbie Seymour, as well as the many friends he made at Glenridge Apartments, where he had lived for the past five years. Per his wishes, there will be no visiting hours or funeral. A graveside interment service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Old Town. After the brief service friends and family are invited to the parish hall at Holy Family Church, Old Town, for refreshments and conversation. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to the Maine Chapter of the National Kidney Society, 470 Forest Ave., Suite 302, Portland, ME 04101.
