AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci says it’s hard to believe but it’s already August — and the weather hasn’t provided much of a summer so far.
But in his weekly radio address, Baldacci says there’s still time to enjoy Maine’s outdoors. He says Maine has a number of nature-based tourism opportunities, such as watching wildlife, hiking and paddling.
In 2005, a company specializing in nature-based tourism development developed an extensive inventory of Maine’s natural resource assets, and since then a Nature-based Tourism Task Force has been formed. Signs have appeared showing how to find many of the best sites.
In the Republican response, Sen. David Trahan of Waldoboro criticizes a state move to collect taxes on meals elderly residents have been receiving at retirement facilities. Trahan calls that troubling and says it’s contrary to legislative sentiment.
