NORTH FRANKLIN – John B. Harty, 70, died peacefully July 31, 2009, at home. He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. John Harty. He graduated from Mount St. Mary’s College, Emmitsburg, Md., in 1961. In 1974 he received his Master of Science degree and in 1976 his Sixth Year Degree from Southern Connecticut State Teachers College with a major in special education. He worked as a teacher and principal in the Norwich public school system. He was past president of New London County Association of Retarded Citizens, NLCARC. Mr. Harty loved the outdoors, was an avid fisherman and enjoyed making homemade maple syrup. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Linda Elliott Harty of North Franklin, Conn.; his daughter, Jennifer Theriault and husband, David, and granddaughter, Elise, of Wakefield, Mass.; his brother, Dr. Richard Harty and his wife, Bonnie, of Oklahoma City; his sister, Judith Foley and her husband, Frank, of Hanover, Conn.; and his brother-in-law, David Elliott of Canton, Conn. At the request of the family, services are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity. Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Old Lyme, Conn., is handling arrangements.
