FORT FAIRFIELD – Preston L. Newcomb, 76, husband of Mrs. Joyce M. (Finnemore) Newcomb, passed away Tuesday morning, Aug. 4, 2009, at a Presque Isle health care facility, after an extended illness. He was born July 28, 1933, in Fort Fairfield, the son of Charles P. and Gladys (Spittle) Newcomb. He was a member of Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1954, and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Prep was married to Joyce M. Finnemore, Nov. 2, 1955, and owned and operated Newcomb’s Market, Fort Fairfield, for 16 years. He was a member of Fort Fairfield Bethel Baptist Church, Fort Fairfield Lions Club, Fort Fairfield Rotary Club, Frontier Fish and Game Club and a life member of VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Fort Fairfield. Prep had served on Fort Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, was vice president, trustee and a former employee of Fort Fairfield Utilities District and served as assistant fire chief for Fort Fairfield Fire Volunteer Department. He will also be fondly remembered by his fellow members of Fort Fairfield “Liars Club.” In addition to his parents, Mr. Newcomb was predeceased by two brothers, Vernon and Basil Newcomb; two sisters, Mable Mahanay and Dorothy Mott; and one special niece, Deborah Clark Shaw. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joyce M. Newcomb; two sons, Peter C. Newcomb and his wife, Pam, and Ralph P. Newcomb, all of Fort Fairfield; one sister, Gail Clark and her husband, Graydon Ruff, of Carlingford, New Brunswick; two granddaughters, Nicole Newcomb of Fort Fairfield and Kaci Marie Newcomb of Caribou; one great-grandson, Trey Preston Newcomb of Fort Fairfield; two stepgrandchildren, Rebecca Byrd and Jeffrey Brown, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three great-stepgrandchildren, Autumn, Hope and James Brown; one great-great- stepgrandson, Noah Brown, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; numerous nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Cathy Edmunds and Susan Bergeron, both of Fort Fairfield. A graveside service of committal with military honors will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield, with the Rev. Mark Babin officiating. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield, immediately after the interment service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Newcomb to Maine Community Fund, Class of 1954 Scholarship, 245 Main St., Ellsworth, ME 04605. Arrangements have been entrusted to Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield.
