BANGOR and BREWER – George Edward Percival, “Porgie” to family and friends, passed away unexpectedly Monday morning, Aug. 10, 2009. He was born Sept. 23, 1932, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of Severn Mortensen Percival and Vera (Gray) Percival. After graduating high school in Buffalo, N.Y., Porgie joined the Air Force. He was stationed in Utah, Louisiana, Japan, England, and Dow Air Force Base, where he met his wife. He retired in 1992 from the Maine Air National Guard as a tech sergeant. He continued to work in security for Eastern Maine Medical Center and the city of Bangor. He also served with Brewer Police Department. A member of Calvary Baptist Church, Brewer, Porgie enjoyed outings with the GMCs, hunting and fishing, and watching the Red Sox and Buffalo Bills games. As an avid photographer, he took pictures for church events. An amateur musician – sousaphone, trombone and clarinet – he also enjoyed attending Bangor Symphony and Bangor Band Concerts to watch his daughter play violin and French horn. Summer would find him frequently visiting Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound for his favorite meal of lobster and clams. George was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Gwendolyn E. (Campbell) Percival; his parents; two brothers, Wilbur George Percival and James Severn Percival; and a sister, Ruth Estelle (Percival) Studer. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda L. and Michael Cushman of Bangor; two sisters, Evie Greatorex of Tonawanda, N.Y., and Thora Chilsen of Brevard, N.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at Calvary Baptist Church, 61 State St., Brewer, with Pastor Roger Davis officiating. Interment will be at Corinthian Cemetery, Exeter Road, East Corinth.
